| Your Question or Comment !! -: | Both of these men lived in Taylorsville, NC which is about 20 miles

probably drafted at Camp Vance (records most likely destroyed when camp
was captured). Searching has not produced service records for them but
pension applications exist. According to the regimental history of the
Jr. Reserves they served as guards at the prison. Any information you
have referencing them would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :-) |

| Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: | Capt. A. C. Godwin |
| Your Question or Comment !! -: | It is my understanding that Capt. A.C. Godwin was the person sent to
Salisbury to form the prison camps there. There are several newspaper
stories written in the Richmond Enquirer, 2/20/62 and 3/7/62, which
mention this fact. There was a camp named after him, "Castle Godwin",
which housed those other than military prisoners. Godwin left the camps
in 1862 and formed the 57th North Carolina, which he led to distinction
is numerous engagements until his death at Third Winchester, Sept. 19th,
1864. An ironic note is that Capt. (at the time Colonel) Godwin was captured at Rappahannock Station and served time in a Federal POW Camp. His cousin, my G-G-Grandfather, W.R. Godwin, was captured at Nashville in Dec. 1864, and served time in Camp Casey, Oh, before being paroled at the end of the war. |

| Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: | David S. Dewald, Co. F, 84th Pennsylvania Volunteers |
| Your Question or Comment !! -: | David S. Dewald is one of 11 Union (5 of whom died) and 2 Confederate
soldiers I have found so far in our family. He enlisted from Moreland Township, Lycoming County, PA on 10/9/1861 for three years. He was a sergeant. He fought in many of the major battles - Kernstown, Port Republic, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville (where he escaped capture) Wilderness & Spotsylvania (where he was wounded) and the Battle of Deep Bottom where his luck finally ran out. He was captured on August 16, 1864 and was in various prisons around Richmond until being transferred to Salisbury on October 9, 1864. He died there on February 15, 1865. I read through the list of burials on the cemetary web site. His name does not appear. I was told by a friend who has done research on the 84th Pennsylvania that there is a mix up with either his name or regiment on the records at the cemetary. I read through all of the "D's", "S's" (for his middle initial) and the "W's" (since his name could be spelled DeWald) and could not find him. Do I assume that he is in one of the thousands of unknown graves? If not, is there some other way I can find out if he has a stone at the cemetary as we would like to visit him. Thanks Beth |

| Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: | Mathias Mitchell |
| Your Question or Comment !! -: | Matthias Mitchell was born in PA in 1815. He apparently died before his youngest daughter was born, September 1862. Family stories are confusing: 1. Mathias was killed in the Battle of Bull Run, but National Archives has no Veterans Record that match. 2. Mathias died in a Confederate Prison Camp. Mathias was a horse trader that routinely traveled from PA into VA; therefore, he could have been retained as a spy or political prisoner. Are the names of the POWs from the Battle of Bull Run available? |

| Your Question or Comment !! -: | My GreatGrandfather was in Co H, 7th Illinois Cavalry and was captured
near Germantown, Tn 30 Jan, 1864. Acording to my elderly aunts, he was put
in Andersonville prison until 1865. However, he is not on the rolls at
Andersonville and the description of the prison that has been handed down
definetly fits Salisbury. He was paroled 28 Feb 1865 in Wilmington, NC which
is alot closer to Salisbury than Andersonville. Is there a prison roll still
in existence? Also, is there a list of the officers at the prison during my
ancestors internment. Again, according to my aunts, GGDad was going to be
shot for escaping to retrieve water from the nearby spring for wounded
prisoners. However, he was spared by a French or patois speaking officer
when GGDad asked in French to be spared. (He was an immigrant from the
French speaking area of Germany). I don't know if any of this is true, but
my GDad swore to the story that was told to him. I do know for fact the date
of service, unit, capture, location and parole. As for the name difference,
he couldn't read or write and his last name sounded like the second
spelling. In fact, BONE is the name given on Federal records. Anyway, hope I
didn't bore you with this story, but I've always wanted to research GGDad.
Thanks for your help. Marty Bohn |
