Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Possible prisoner or relative
Your Question or Comment !! -: My GGrandfather, John Craig Watts, immigrated from Scotland to America in the 1840's along with one or two brothers. He first bought land in Cabarrus County in 1868 and married the widow Priscilla (Arey) Hartman in 1873.

Anecdotal information has it that John Craig visited Salisbury prison to meet his brother who may have been imprisoned there from the Civil War. It was also rumored that he may have offered to replace his brother in prison for a time while the brother conducted essential business at home or elsewhere.

I would like to discover whether such visit or visits may have been recorded, and if so the dates and circumstances under which they were allowed. Also, the name of the brother or other person/persons whom my G Grandfather visited.

Other anecdotal information suggests that John C and his brother(s) may have first immigrated to New York or other locations where they worked and/or had families before 1868.
How did you discover the info you have now?: My first cousin related these stories from her mother (now deceased) who had heard from her parents or kin.

The dates of 1868 land purchase and 1873 marriage are known to be correct, as is the name of the widow Hartman.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: George Washington Kershner
Your Question or Comment !! -: This man is an ancestor who kept a daily diary. I have transcribed this diary. He was sent to Salisbury on October 8, 1864. There are daily entries until Nov. 30, 1864. He talks about the conditions, disease, numbers of deaths, food prices and even the riot on November 25. I am working with a military historian from the NC State Archives about how to develop this material but wanted to see if there is more information I can get about his stay, particularly after the end of his journal entries. Any help would be appreciated.

Your Question or Comment !! -: Dear Sirs;
According to what I'm researching, the 55th Georgia Volunteer Infantry was placed on detached service after their release from being captured at Cumberland Gap, to both Andersonville and Salisbury as guards.
Jarvis Ethridge died 23 September, 1864. I'm not sure if he was at Salisbury or Andersonville, or if he was sick or wounded, dying later than the battle at Cumberland Gap. Do you have records on him and if so cause of death?
He is my ancestor and I want to get to know him better. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, Bill Coil

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Big Tennessee
Your Question or Comment !! -: I read a book several years ago, whose title I've long since forgotten, about a North Carolina Confederate camp at which a black Northern soldier known only as "Big Tennessee" was imprisoned. I am not sure if the camp was Salisbury or not. If memory serves right, the camp was actually rather well run, and the POWs were not ill-treated--nothing like, say, Andersonville. The POW camp was near the Catawba river, and after the war ended, the former prisoners were taken away by steamboat on the Catawba, but the boat blew its stack, killing several aboard. Any help in finding the book or further information about Big Tennessee would be greatly appreciated.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: James Rufus Swink
Your Question or Comment !! -: I am looking for as much information on my great-great-great grandfather (listed above)as possible. I have learned that he was born in 1820, enlisted in the civil war at age 44 in Rowan County on July 7th 1862. He was a private in Co. K, 57th Regiment, NC troops. He was captured at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, Nov. 7th 1863 and imprisoned at Point Lookout, MD. Recieved at City Point, Virginia, March 20th 1864 for exchange. Took the Oath of Allegiance in Salisbury on June 1st 1865. I would like to know how I could find the documentation to prove these facts. Could I find copies at the Rowan County Library or would I have to write Washington DC? I am also doing research on all civil war prisons and am considering the possibility of writing a book. I already have a great deal of information and The Salisbury Prison Symposium is one of the reasons my curosity has peaked. I have decided to start researching them to get an idea of what my Great-Great-Great Grandfather had to go through while at Point Lookout. I am also doing the research to do a presentation for My SCV unit, Rowan Rifles Camp 405 in Salisbury. I am also a confederate re-enactor with the 63rd NC and we do a couple of events in Salisbury each year, one of which is the annual ghost walk or lantern tour at the Luthern Cemetery, and the Prison Symposium. I know Salisbury is full of confederate history and often wonder what the city was like before, during, and after the civil war. Now that I think about it... this would probably make a good book as well... maybe later. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
Confederately,
Randy Aldridge

Your Question or Comment !! -: I have been interested for some time in the prison at Salisbury as it is the last home for Edward Nichols, 36th Reg Wis Inf, Co. C. He died there on 27 Nov 1864 and is buried in the graveyard. He was imprisoned with a number of other men from the 36th who were captured on 25 Aug 1864 at Reams Station and first sent to Belle Island and then transferred to Salisbury around 10 Oct 1864. Edward came from the small town of Sparta, Wisconsin and according to the 1860 and the 1850 Census was only 14 or 15 years old when he enlisted and 15 or 16 when he died. While there, they met up with soldiers from another locally drawn 19th Wis Reg, Co. C who were captured at Fair Oaks on 27 Oct 1864. Edward was a brother to my great grandfather. I am most interested in any new information that was not covered in Brown's excellent book. I have sent in my application to the Salisbury Confederate Prison Association as well.
How did you discover the info you have now?: I have investigated what I can at the Wisconsin Historical Society which includes Regimental documents and diaries of soldiers held at the camp. I have read the definative book by Louis A. Brown and also a couple of personal histories such as "Dark Days in Rebeldom". There was also a short history of the prison that I found in the Southern Historical Association publications by Rev. Mangum.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Re:William Helm/Helms
Your Question or Comment !! -: William Helm served with the Company I, 6th Infantry West Virginia Volunteers, he was captured at Bradys Mill Aug 2, 1864 and taken to Belle Isle Prison in Richmond, Va. He was later transferred to (uncertain if Andersonville or Salisbury). On the back of Wm picture a note is written that he died in Andersonville. But a researcher has said he was transferred to Salisbury, and arrived Oct. 9, 1864. Wm starved to death and died Jan. 12, 1865. It also states that he was buried in a pit. This same researcher lists his final military record read, "Died of starvation at the hands of the Rebels, January 12, 1865". Can anyone help me to see if William is listed anywhere?

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Private Jacob Noe, Company C, 5th Maryland Infantry Volunteers
Your Question or Comment !! -: In researching my Great-Great-Grandfather, Jacob Noe, I was able to trace his movements through his capture at the second Battle of Fair Oaks, VA in 1864. According to military documents I have acquired, the Deapartment of War sent my great-great-grandmother a record dated April 9, 1868 that states, "(Jacob)died while prisoner of war at Salisbury, NC on or about January 15, 1865."

Would you have any additional information in this regard? Why is his name not included on your records? Would this indicate he was buried in an unmarked grave?

Thank you in advance for any light you can shed on these matters. I plan to visit Salisbury in 2005 with other members of my family to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Jacob's death.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Rufus E. Mears
Your Question or Comment !! -: Rufus E. Mears died in Salisbury Prison on 26 October 1864. He was a shoemaker from Essex, Massachusetts, and he was brother to my 3x great grandfather, Samuel Mears. My other 2xgreat grandfather, Joseph Allen, served at a Union POW prison, Fort Warren, in Boston. Conditions there were probably bleak, it being on an island in Boston Harbor, but not nearly has horrible as at Salisbury. Rufus was the youngest son of Samuel and Lydia Mears and was 21 years old when he enlisted in the 39th Regiment, Company A., under Colonel P.S. Davis and Captain George S. Nelson. he was in the battles of Mine Run, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, North Anna, Tolopotomy, Bethesda Church and Petersburg. He was taken prisoner at the Wheldon Railroad, August 18, 1864, and died in the prison at Salisbury, 26, October, 1864. I am just beginning to research what the prison at Salisbury was like.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Trying to track down an ancestor - Henry Dunn/PA 40th Inf/190th
Your Question or Comment !! -: I am doing family research. My great-grandather had three brothers who all were in the Union Army. They all joined the 40th PA Inf, Company H, 11th Res. They were George B. Dunn, James Dunn, and Henry Dunn. George survived the war and lived until 1921. James died in Bristoe Station, Virginia, and Henry was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Wilderness (May 64). I recently rec'd some documents from the National Archives, namely pension records, where his widow and children were applying for benefits. They were affadavits from other soldiers in his unit, who testify that they were in the Andersonville Prison with Henry Dunn, and that he died of disease while there. My family has always said that Henry was taken to Libby Prison, and then Salisbury, where he died. My problem is that I cannot find him in the records of either prison. I can however, find several soldiers from his unit in Salisbury, including a McBride, who left the prison alive. One of the affidavits is from a McBride. Any suggestions in helping me get the facts? Thanks, Dan
