Your Question or Comment !! -: I'm trying to find thee prison camps in South Carolina. I was sent one page of a diary that was left and it states that he was captured at Parks Ferry,Tn on or about 17,November,1863,and was confined in Atlanta,Andersonville Belle Isle,Va Charleston and Florence,SC. The page says he escaped 17,February,1865 from Newbern,SCIt states that they were brought there the day before from Florence SC prison, any help on some of the prisons would really help. He was listed as being a prisoner at Andersonville. He was with 112 Illinois Infantry. It states tha he floated down the Neuse River past the Rebel Army at Kinston N.C I'm confused. Thanks Jean

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Union prisoners enlisting in CS service
Your Question or Comment !! -: Looking for information on union prisoners who enlisted in the confederate service from Salisbury prison. I've found reference to a list of men who were captured by Maj. Gen. Stoneman at Salisbury who admitted they were Union POWs who enlisted with the confederates to "escape starvation". The group was sent to Nashville, TN and eventually released upon taking the oath of allegance. One member of the group was Joseph Vaness, a member of Company E, 145th Pennsylvania Infantry. Vaness was captured at Salisbury while serving with the "8th CS". Although discharged from the 145th in 1866, Vaness ran into problems when he attempted to apply for a pension. Eventually he was listed as "deserting to the enemy" with his discharge falsely obtained and denied a pension.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Salisbury Prison
Your Question or Comment !! -: My G Grandfather, Theodore Breckenridge, 107th PA Vet Vols, was captured Aug 16, 1864 at the battle of Weldon Railroad, along with eight other menbers of his Company (E). They were held for about two months at Belle Isle in the James River, Richmond VA. They were then transferred to Salisbury and spent the balance of the winter of 64/65. Of the nine only four lived through the winter. I have Brown's book on the prison and found the names of all the other eight but could not find his name anywhere. There is even a list of PA prisoners who were invited back for a reunion after the war. He was not on that list. If anyone can find his name on the records at Salisbury I would be forever grateful. Your Question or Comment !! -: John McKinnon enrolled Oct 17, 1861 at Ogdensburg, New York in Company D of the 7th New York Cavalry, known as the "Black Horse Cavalry." They left NY for Washington, D.C., on November 23, 1861, and had duty there till March, 1862. He mustered out on March 31, 1862. He was a blacksmith, standing 6' 5" and weighed over 250 pounds. Somehow he was captured and sent to a Confederate prison, where he met a guard who was a fellow highland Scot. After convincing the guard that he was truly a highlander, John was secreted out of the prison and hidden under a house until a large enough confederate uniform for him to wear was found. John was released and sent north to New York. I have not been able to find out which prison he was in, but it had to be the one in Salisbury, NC. Can anyone tell me how I can verify this information? Thanks.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: David C. Beale
Your Question or Comment !! -: My grandmother was told through her husband's sister that 1st Lieutenant (as of May 20, 1865) David Beale from Union Company L, 159th Regiment, 14th Calvary was in a prison in Hillsville, VA., near Mt. Airy, NC. towards the end of his service in the Civil War. We can't find anything for Hillsville, so we thought perhaps he was in a North Carolina prison?

The history of the regiment for the troop movements under Gen. Averill's command says they "undertook a movement through Virginia" in the spring of 1864, "which was successfully accomplished after great difficulty."

He was discharged July 31, 1865 by general order, so we don't know how long he was in prison, or the name of it.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Benneville Schell, pvt 7th PA Reserves
Your Question or Comment !! -: My great great uncle Benneville was captured at the Wilderness, spent time in Andersonville and later was interred at Salisbury. My cousin Bob has visited there several times and, with the help of the Daughters of the Confederacy and library, have found five solitary graves. One of these graves might be my ancestor. The story has it that my ancestor was buried in a solitary grave with a sealed jar on his chest with his name in it.

I'm wondering if any work has been done toward getting permission to investigate those graves. Any information you might have would be very helpful.

Keep up the good work with your site.

He was taken prisoner of war and sent to Harrisonburg, VA hospital and then transferred to Richmond, VA. On Oct. 9, 1864 he was sent to Salisbury, NC.
I have records saying he died while a POW in NC and I also have a notation that he was taken to Aikins Landing Dec. 28, 1864 for transfer to Union. I can find no records to indicate that he indeed made it back to PA. I would like to know if he is buried at Salisbury. My g-g-grandfather died while a POW at Florence, SC, and is interred there. Your Question or Comment !! -: I am President of a local historical society in Sauk County, WI. Dyball and Crall(above) both enlisted in Co A, 36th WVI in Madison, Wisconsin in February 1864. According to an affadavit certified by Crall in Dyball's Pension file, James Dyball and Crall were both taken prisoner at the Battle of Ream's Station, VA. on 25 August 1864, taken first to Belle Island and from there to Salisbury Prison, North Carolina. This same affadavit by Crall says that he saw Dyball both when he was sick and after he was dead, and that he died in the prison hospital there of chronic diarrhea on 5 December 1864. I am looking for some evidence that he is buried there.

John B. Crall arrived home via train in March 1865 very emaciated, delirious, and never fully recovered. He died of heart problems attributed to his service in the Civil War on 17 February 1879 in Franklin Township, Sauk County, Wisconsin.

Your Question or Comment !! -: James Henry Shore of Yadkin County enlisted at Yadkinville, I believe and walked to Camp Salisbury. Would his enlistment actually have been at Salisbury? Where in Salisbury is Camp Fisher? Is it the same place as the prison?

He was sent almost immediately to Camp Vance near Morganton for training as a Junior Reserve and as a prison guard for ther prison there. Before the 240 Junior Reserves were given their rifles the Camp was overrun on 6/28/64 by Union Captain Kirk and his 130 man raiding party from Tennessee.

He was captured with most of the other Junior Reserves, marched to Tennessee and shipped to prison at Camp Douglas, Chicago for the rest of the war.

I am writing of his experiences and would like to know what he would have seen and experienced in his brief stay in Salisbury.

Your Question or Comment !! -: I am delighted to say that my great-great-great-uncle, a private in the 12th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, Jesse Hartzell, was one of Stoneman's troopers who participated in the liberation and destruction of Salisbury Prison:

"Twenty miles south of where we cut the Richmond and Dansville railroad was Salsbury, at which point was one of the most infamous prison pens in the confederacy and the town was also a depot for army supplies. It was garrisoned by a force of about five thousand under Major Gardiner. He heard there was a yankee brigade tearing up the railroads and he sent General Pemberton, the man who defended Vicksburg so gallantly against General Grant; he came with four thousand men and fourteen cannon, and we had to face infantry and artillery.
"Now muskets were all right but the cannon weren’t, because we did not have any, and when those big guns went off, or came off in our direction I wanted [to be] behind something big. The trees were all misfits — I never saw one that was not too small. We stayed right there till Brown’s brigade struck our cannon ball slinging friends on the flank, when we were ordered “number one and three draw sabre, number two and four draw pistol,” which were colts revolvers, and we charged and cleaned that crowd out so that we took all the cannon — captured over thirteen hundred prisoners, and three thousand muskets, so there were only a thousand got away with their guns.
"This fight occurred in the late afternoon and in the morning we ran the Johnny boys out of Salsbury and captured an immense amount of ammunition, provisions, clothing, ten thousand small arms, medicines, millions of dollars in confederate money, some of which came very handy afterwards, four cotton factories which made cloth for the rebel army, and seven thousand bales of cotton. We burned them all except what we wanted ourselves, and tore up and destroyed the tracks of the railroads which converged here, but the thing we most delighted in was burning the prison pens. The prison graveyard gave ample evidence of devilish work that had been going on here, and the survivors were tenderly cared fro and sent strongly guarded to Knoxville."

Dear Sir or Madam:

I have a small amount of information regarding my ggggrandfather, William Shuping's, participation in the Civil War. Apparently he was in Co. H, 1st Regiment, NC Troops and was captured at Salisbury on April 12, 1865. He was then sent to Camp Chase, Ohio until June 13, 1865.

I am trying to find out any information regarding his unit. Is it a home guard unit? I am also wondering how he was captured at Salisbury. Was there a battle there?

Thanks,

Edward Tyndall

Your Question or Comment !! -: Hello, Thank you for putting all the work into this site. I can appreciate what it takes. Please visit my site if you have a chance. www58thmass.org. I'm researching my g-grandfather's regiment (58th Mass). He was wounded and taken prisoner on Sept. 30th, 1864 at Peeble's Farm outside Petersburg, VA. He was taken to Richmond for treatment because of his wound but I've read all the other men in his regiment that were captured that day went to Salisbury. (Though I'm not sure of that source now.) It was a bad day for the 58th; of all who were in that battle, only one commissioned officer and ten enlisted men from the 58th escaped capture. Their brigade was nearly decimated. The 45th Pennsylvania and 51st NY had a large number of men captured as well. There were several hundred Union prisoners taken that day in that one operation so there must have been a large influx at Salisbury. Is there a complete roster of all who came to Salisbury from the 58th Mass? If so, I would be very interested in knowing the fate of all those men. I've been building a database of this regiment and the Salisbury data is what I'm lacking. By the way, of 44 men from the 58th who went to Andersonville, 26 never made it home. Thank you for your interest. GD.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Fred Bailey, 2ed Rhode Island Infantry
Your Question or Comment !! -: Thanks for all your work on this site, I was able to locate my great grand Uncle Fred Bailey, 2ed RI, on the POW lists, June 9, 1862. He was captured at First Manassas or First Bull Run, and he died in 1910 in Providence, RI so we knew he must have been paroled, but didnt know the details until now.

He was the tallest man in the Union Army at just under 8 feet, and he was associated with the Barnum and Bailey circus for many years.
How did you discover the info you have now?: The Bailey family has lots of oral history passed down from generation to generation. Tradition has it that Shang agreed with the Rebels not to fight for the Union Army any more as a condition of his parole, so he promptly joined the Union NAVY when he got back home. There is a picture of him at http://www.loggiftshop.com/history.cfm
