William was captured at Reams Station, VA, and sent to Salisbury POW camp. BUT - according to records recently received from the National Archives, at Salisbury he joined the Confederate Army! The docs also show a "paroled at" that I can't read, as well as a note "Name does not appear on rolls of Foreign Battl, C.S." First, does anyone know of which regiments might have been recruiting Union POWs? Does the "Foreign Battl. C.S." make sense? Thanks, Rich Minnich rich_minnich@vcnet.com |

| Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: | George A. Terry, !st Mich. Cav. Co.D, Captured 10/19/64 Cedar Creek |
| Your Question or Comment !! -: | Great-great Grandfather George Terry died in Salisbury Prison around Christmas time, acc. to War Dept Records. He did not live to return to Michigan to see his newborn daughter, Eliza Mildred Terry, my paternal great grandmother. I presume his internment was in one of the mass burial graves, but I do not know for sure, and would like to know. As is known from the records, Mr. Terry fought In V Corps under MG George A. Custer at Gettysburg. Lee's forces retreated into Maryland and Northern Virginia, where they escaped. Later at the Battle of Cedar Creek, in the one skirmish during that engagement in which the Union did not prevail, Mr. Terry was captured and taken South. His war records indicate he died at Salisbury. |

| Your Question or Comment !! -: | I recently foung my great-great-grandfather listed in a 1890 Marblehead, MA, census of Civil War veterans and/or their widows. His name was John F. Green. The listing said John F. Green, Pvt., Co. D, 39th Mass Inf., of Marblehead, MA, who enlisted July 10, 1863, and died at Salisbury, NC, Dec. 15, 1864. His widow's name was Mary S. Green. (from "Vital Records of Union Veterans -1890 Census - Marblehead, MA.") (The International Genealogy Index - North America lists a "John W. Green" dying at Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina, on "13 Dec 1864." I would be inclined to trust the Marblehead Vital Records listing for the middle inital of "F," but not sureif these are the same person.) |

| Your Question or Comment !! -: | According to my great uncle's application for pension, he was captured at Cedar Creek 19 oct 1864, taken to Richhmon VA then to Salisbury, NC in Nov 1864. He maintains he was then taken to Andersonville but the Union maintains that he is the William H Pearson who was recruited into Tucker's Foreign Battalion. Tucker's Battalion was formed under orders written in Feb 1865 from Lt. Gen. Hardee authorizing Lieut. Col. J. G. Tucker to recruit from the prisoners of war. It specifically stated that "only men of Irish and French nationality will be recruited and they will only be used for engineering service" William was not Irish or French. There is no clear evidence that the William Pearson was my man. There are a number of William H. Pearson/Pierson's who served in the Civil War, one in particular with the same birth month, year and state of birth as my man. How can I find out more about the soldier who was recruited into Tucker's regiment.? |

| Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: | Pvt. Oliver Gosler, Co. E, 57th Massachusetts Infantry |
| Your Question or Comment !! -: | I am researching the men from my home town of Leicester, MA. who died in time of war. I am currently involved with the Civil War Veterans. I am trying to determine if Pvt. Oliver Gosler was at Salisbury Prison. He is on the MEmorial Wall in the Leicester, MA. Town Hall. It lists him as died of wounds on June 7, 1864, at Petersburg, VA. There are several conflicting Army reports about his fate. One has him buried in a battlefield cemetery at Spotsylvania, VA. Two others have him listed as missing in action on different dates, May 12, 1864 and May 24, 1864. The most detailed report is a Company Muster Roll dated July 30, 1865.It states exactly, "Prisoner at Hanover Junction May 24, 1864. Confined in prison Richmond, VA. May 28, 1864, sent to hospital same day, was returned to guard on August 2, 1864 and sent to Salisbury NC. October 9, 1864 where he died November 26, 1864 of disease." I am trying to determine which is most likely correct, buried on the battlefield or died in prison. Any information you may have would be appreciated. |
| How did you discover the info you have now?: | The first list I got was off of the Civil War Memorial Wall in the Leicester, MA. town hall. The State of Massachusetts published two different sets of volumes on Civil War Veterans. The first is two volumed The Record of Massachusetts Volunteers 1861-1865, published 1870. It lists the units in sequential order and the roster of men who served in them in alphabetiacal order. It gives dates of enlistment, muster, discharge, prisoner, missing, desertion or death and town credited with enlistment and any bounties paid. The second is Massachusetts Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines of the Civil War, published 1938. It is 11 volumes long. It is similar but contains a unit history at the beginning of each units list and has an index at the begining. I also went to the Massachusetts Military Museam in Worcester, MA where the have enlistment rolls, Company Muster Rolls, Hospital Reports, casualty reports, and letters of inquiry on microfilm. |

| Your Question or Comment !! -: | Lyman T. Stoddard, age 24, was a Corporal in Co. A of 112th New York Infantry. He was taken prisoner 24 August 1864, and initially held at Richmond, VA. He was transfered to Salisbury 9 October 1864. According to his military record, he contracted diarrhea and fever there, was hospitalized on 28 January 1865, and died 31 January 1865. I suspect he is one of the many unamed soldiers burried there. |
