Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR EUGENE FROM NORTH CAROLINA
Your Question or Comment !! -: Penna. records show Jacob Weaver, 211-K, was captured at the Bermuda Hundred, Va. on Nov. 17, 1864. The unknown burial trenches in the cemetery are the original ones. The cemetery was built around those original trenches. As you faced the trenches, the prison was to your left about 1/4 mile on the same side of the RR tracks as the cemetery.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR MISS MEGAN FROM NC/VA REL ROBT. LIVINGSTON
Your Question or Comment !! -: It took a while to find the info so I hope you are still checking this site. Livingston was wounded in the Nov. 1864 mass escape attempt, dying in early December. He is believed to be buried in one of the trenches. His father was supposedly informed of his death but never visited Salisbury. Two rumors about his enlistment; he volunteered and he was drugged before he volunteered. If you want more info, contact me on the e-mail address.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR BONNIE FROM CALIFORNIA
Your Question or Comment !! -: Brown's work has no listing for Richard Haas (Hawes). The prison was closing at this time; records were poor at best most of the time and probably worse during the closing. Several prisoners at the death house were the main source for any record keeping. He could have died on the train to Richmond or the march and train ride to Goldsboro/Wilmington, NC, both places were exchange points for the closing. If in Richmond, maybe the various cemeteries might have a listing. If on the march and train ride, he could have been buried almost anywhere along the way.

Your Question or Comment !! -: I am looking for information on Mordecai Bean, Citizen of Frederick VA. He was mentioned in the 29 July 1862 New York Tribune Article, but no mention of what happened to him is found. In "The Salisbury Prison" by Louis Brown there is a Bear, M - Citizen of Virginia who died 7-3-1863. I am wondering if anyone has information on the report from 1867 that is cited. I am trying to find out if this was actually M. Bean instead of Bear.

Patrick was born in County Cavan Ireland in 1843. Parents names are also unknown. While searching Ancestr.com I came across the Com. B 5th Cavalry on Ancestry.com Record of service of service of Michigan volunteers in the Civil War 1861-1865. then I read where Patrick was taken prisoner on July 4th, 1863 at Emmetsburg, Pa. then to Com. B 1st cavalry and Honorably discharged at Detroit,Michigan. And reading further there was James Weldon-Welton who was in the same com and cavalry and joined in Mich. Was He also a prisoner, and he was discharged at Fort Levenworth,Kan. I also read that Patrick was wounded but not sure if either of them were. And have found nothing on the other Weldon boy who also joined.I am now the end of the Weldon Family and had my 82nd. birthday on April 1st. I am trying to put names with them all and of course I will deeply appricate any and all information that you can give me. Margaret Jeanne Weldon Silver silverstrings 1929@yahoo.com

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR JOHN FOLTS FROM PA
Your Question or Comment !! -: With a name as common as John Miller, more info (minimum of his unit) will be needed. I have three John Millers in the one unit I research. There is no list of just prisoners, only those who were in the hospital, deserted to the Confederacy or died. Salisbury closed at the end of February 1865 and Stoneman burned it in April of 1865. Miller's date to May probably included his time in a hospital or Camp Parole after his release.

Your Question or Comment !! -: I'm on a road trip to Salisbury, NC, attending the Prison symposium and was just standing in the cemetery yesterday but I don't have my records with me. Samuel Keckler, 190-A, died in February and was buried in one of the 18 mass burial trenches. Without my records, I'm guessing he was captured at the Weldon Railroad near Petersburg, Va. on August 19, 1864. I'll check further when I return home in about 10 days. Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR PAUL STOTT FROM KANSAS
Your Question or Comment !! -: Thomas Stott is not listed in Brown's book on Salisbury but this is not unusual as records are poor. Checking other sources I have, I located: Thomas Stott, age 21, enlisted Aug. 14, 1862, in Company I, 121st Penna. Vol. in Philadelphia, Pa. A large portion of this regiment was captured Oct. 1, 1864, in the fighting at Peeble's Farm (siege of Petersburg). Bates' history for the regiment has him dying in Salisbury Dec. 5, 1864, burial would be in one of the trenches. There is also listed a James Stott, same enlistment info, perhaps a relative. You will have to send to Washington for his military records which might give you the personal info you are seeking.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Henry Wakefield
Your Question or Comment !! -: My father claimed his uncle Henry died at Libby Prison in Richmond, but I recently discovered in a history of East Montpelier, Vermont that he may have died at Salisbury. Henry was taken prisoner July 30. He died in prison Feb 19, 1865. "A MEMBER OF CO. E. 17th REG. VT. VOLS." from his gravestone in East Montpelier.
How did you discover the info you have now?: Authors: Ellen C. Hill and Marilyn S. Blackwell. Title: Across the Onion. 1983. Text: Page 146. Salisbury prison, established in an old cotton mill, was equally loathsome. It housed ten thousand Federal prisoners and six thousand, including Henry Wakefield, died of starvation and disease.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: John H. Thompson
Your Question or Comment !! -: John H. Thompson who was born in Tennessee had several other brothers that fought for the Union in the Civil War. John H. Thompson, however, died in a prison camp in North Carolina. Since this is the only Civil War Prison camp in North Carolina, I assume this is the one. Other Thompsons, including John H.'s brother, Asbury C. Thompson and his father Russell Thompson, survived the war.
How did you discover the info you have now?: I found some of this information on the Civil War records that list soldiers, where they were born, their rank, etc. Someone else in the family who is much better at research than I has John H. Thompson's records.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR SCOTT FROM ILLINOIS
Your Question or Comment !! -: This is probably your ancestor. Hadley, Alras, pvt., 7th Ind., dying November 12, 1864. Remember, back then, all records were hand written and interpretation by the person who made the lists could be very bad at times. August 19, 1864, was date of the fighting on the Weldon RR southwest of Petersburg, Va., at a place called Globe Tavern.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR ELIZABETH KLINE FROM MD
Your Question or Comment !! -: Louis Brown's work has Davis, E. P., pvt., Company M, 1st Maryland, dying in Salisbury Jan. 26, 1865. Under his list Civilians Held at Prison, there is a listing (exact quote): Davis, Edwin or Edward P., Va., Taken prisoner 11-2-1862, but still in Salisbury on 30 April 1864: R.L.; Off. Rec. 2 VII, 100-101; Shenks' report, p.1111. Off. Rec. is abreviation for Official Records which is short for: War of the Rebellion, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Series II, vol. 7, page 100-101. I quote: Hdqrs. Dept. of Virginia and North Carolina, Office Commissioner for Exchange, Fort Monroe, Va., April 30, 1864. Hon. Robert Ould, Agent for Exchange, Richmond, Va.: Sir: Will you please inform me on what grounds Edward P. Davis, of Loudon County, Va., is now held as prisoner at Salisbury, N.C.? He was taken prisoner November 6, 1862. I have the honor to be, very respectfully, your obedient servant, Benj. F. Butler Major-General and Commissioner for Exchange. I am not familiar with Shenks' report.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR MARIA FROM NC REL. JACOB PAULUS
Your Question or Comment !! -: Louis Brown's book lists a Private Jacob Paul, Company F, 128th New York Regiment, dying January 27, 1865. He was buried in one of the trenches which you can see scrolling down the photos on the main page. The white markers you see are for vets from later wars. There will be no details on his capture; this must be obtained through his service records or possibly in a regimental history for the 128th NY.

Your Question or Comment !! -: This site was wonderful to find. My Great GrandFather was in a NY regimen that was captured just before the war ended. He died in the Prison and was buried there. I am looking for any information on him and his time at the prison. I would also like to come and take a picture of his grave marker for the family archives. This is a more pressing matter since the geneologist in the family is quite old and sick. He has worked very hard to collect our family history and I would like to be able to do this for him before he passes away.

Your Question or Comment !! -: Lafferty was in Company F of the original Bucktails, transferred to Company F, 190th Pa. Vol. on June 1, 1864, captured at the Weldon RR on August 19, 1864, probably went to Belle Isle Prison in Richmond before transferring to Salisbury in October 1864. Suggest you go online to Pennsylvania Reserves Volunteer Corps Historical Society, then to historian's branch, and then to the 190th Pa. Regiment to read the units history. (no fee involved) If you need more help, ask.
